About Our Founders

Girls Ment To Be was founded by Shaquondra Thompson and Mikeya Allen, two women whose shared passion for empowering young girls—especially those in underserved communities—drove them to create a transformative organization.
Shaquondra, a native of Clinton, MS, began her career as a first-grade teacher in Jackson Public Schools, where she saw the impact of mentorship on young girls. Her work as a Community Engagement Manager for a nonprofit serving children in foster care deepened her belief that every girl deserves to be seen, heard, and supported.
Mikeya, from Greenville, MS, grew up in a family of educators and developed a deep appreciation for mentorship. After mentoring freshmen at Tougaloo College and teaching elementary school, Mikeya’s experiences reinforced her belief that young girls need strong role models to help them build self-esteem and leadership skills.
Together, Shaquondra and Mikeya combined their experiences in education, mentorship, and community work to create Girls Ment To Be. Their mission is to empower young girls, helping them excel academically, build confidence, and develop leadership skills. Through mentorship and community programs, Girls Ment To Be provides a supportive space for girls to grow into confident, capable leaders ready to take on the world.
